Colours play an important role in Frank's music: he takes inspiration from them. We interviewed him when he released his first single, since then he and his music have evolved. His latest single is called "Tony Montana".
IN THE FIRST INTERVIEW WITH DARECLAN YOU TALKED ABOUT YOUR WAY OF DOING MUSIC AND YOUR FIRST SINGLE “CRISI D’ASTINENZA” HAD JUST BEEN PUBLISHED. THEN YOU PUBLISHED MANY SONGS, HOW HAS YOUR MUSIC EVOLVED IN THIS PERIOD OF TIME?
I think music should represent what’s in the head of the artist and that’s why it should evolve and constantly be different from the past. My music changed a lot since my first single in 2018. I recorded a whole album and the songs that came out during 2021 belong to the same project. This is why they have common features regarding the sound and the lyrics. They are all connected by a concept which is the stream of consciousness.
“CIELO SENAPE” IS ONE OF YOUR MOST STREAMED SONGS: THE MUSIC IS FULL OF SHADES AND COLORS AND IT IS ADDICTIVE. HOW WAS IT BORN? WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS TITLE?
I started to write this song while driving to Rome, it was a rainy day and the sky was yellow just like mustard. A storm just came in that morning and staring at that sky I felt a little bit of anxiety but at the same time adrenaline. I chose that title because of the color of the sky that morning.
IN YOUR SONGS YOU OFTEN USE METAPHORS THAT DESCRIBE REAL MOMENTS OF LIFE, FOR EXAMPLE “SIAMO IN VIAGGIO MA NON SAPPIAMO BENE DOVE STIAMO ANDANDO” OR “NOI COME VLADIMIR ED ESTRAGON, ASPETTANDO GODOT”, ARE YOU WORRIED ABOUT THE FACT THAT LISTENERS COULD NOT UNDERSTAND THAT WELL THE REFERENCES, ALSO LITERAL, THAT YOU DO?
I think music should educate the listener which means saying things that people can search for. Not everyone has ever seen Scarface but it would be great if thanks to my song someone could see it, just to understand who is Tony Montana. In my opinion music should do this. I get bored when I listen to a song which tells me nothing new apart from what I already know.
IN THE SONG “BENZINA” THE ELECTRONIC GENRE PREVAILS BUT THERE IS ALSO A GUITAR SOLO THAT RECALLS ROCK SONORITIES. HOW DID YOU GET THE IDEA TO PUT TOGETHER SUCH DIFFERENT SOUNDS?
In the song Benzina I tried to mix together electronic sounds and distorted guitars to get a different dimension of sound. I wanted the right “dress” for the lyrics of the song.
YOUR LAST SINGLE IS “TONY MONTANA” THE MAIN CHARACTER OF THE FAMOUS MOVIE “SCARFACE”, DO YOU OFTEN TAKE INSPIRATION FROM MOVIES WHEN YOU WRITE YOUR SONGS?
Cinema is one of my biggest passions and I like to use famous characters to describe or depict images of everyday life. It’s easy for me to do that since I watched so many vintage films and I think that retro vibe matches perfectly with the mood of my songs.
EVERY SONG OF YOURS AND ITS COVER IS REPRESENTED BY A COLOR: YOU CHOSE PURPLE FOR “BENZINA”, THEN YELLOW FOR “CIELO SENAPE” AND LIGHT BLUE FOR “TONY MONTANA”. IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE A COLOR THAT REPRESENT YOUR WHOLE ALBUM WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE?
I think the color of the album should be white. I like the idea of white meant as a strong light that hits you so hard but at the same time that you can’t touch or handle.
