WEPRO: DARING WITH SOUNDS, DARING WITH MUSIC

Wepro is a young singer songwriter who develops his art over the years and became even more aware of it. He likes daring with his music and that's why he gets his hands on more different sounds.

HELLO WEPRO! TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF. HOW DID YOUR PASSION FOR MUSIC START?

I remember my father used to put on Pink Floyd CDs when I was a kid, I was completely scared and fascinated by them at the same time. When I was 14 I started listening to them pretty often and I was blown away by them and by the whole musical world. Then one day my cousin's boyfriend gave me a burnt cd with Green Day, Blink, Sum 41 and others on it and I wanted to start playing an instrument and, from that moment on, my life changed.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE WEPRO AS YOUR STAGE NAME?

It kind of chose me, it was a nickname I used on facebook because of my band at the time, the Wedding Project, Wepro in fact is the union of those two words. I started using this name on facebook and since then all my friends started calling me like this. So when the time to choose a stage name came, I already had one, there was no doubt about it.

HOW DID YOUR LATEST SINGLE "DRAM!" WAS BORN? WHAT DOES THIS TRACK MEAN TO YOU?

It's probably my first song in a major key ahaha it sounds crazy but I've always been writing songs that tend to be very sad, dark or pissed off. This is one of those songs where I said to myself "this time I'm going to change" and it felt good.

IF YOU WERE TO LOOK AT YOUR ARTISTIC JOURNEY FROM THE OUTSIDE, HOW DO YOU THINK IT HAS EVOLVED FROM THE BEGINNING UNTIL NOW?

There has been a beautiful growth, from a kid who just wanted to play music and be noticed, I became a person who really cares about his art.

IF YOU HAD TO MAKE A COMPARISON BETWEEN THE WEPRO OF "STOP/REPLAY" AND "UN MALE CANE" AND THE WEPRO OF "BLU CRISTALLO", WHAT WOULD BE THE BIGGEST "DIFFERENCE" AND "SIMILARITY" YOU WOULD NOTICE?

The similarity is that it's still me, the difference is my desire to get my hands on more different sounds.

IN 2018 YOU TOOK THE STAGE AT SANREMO GIOVANI AND YOUR PERFORMANCE OF "STOP/REPLAY" WAS, IN MY OPINION, THE BEST AND MOST ORIGINAL ONE. HOWEVER, THE NEXT STEP WAS TAKEN BY ARTISTS WHO PERFORMED IN A MORE "TRADITIONAL" WAY. WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IN OUR COUNTRY IT IS (UNFORTUNATELY) STILL A "TABOO" TO DARE IN MUSIC? OR ANYWAY, WHEN YOU DO SO, IS IT DIFFICULT TO BE UNDERSTOOD BY THE LISTENER?

Thank you very much for the compliment. Because as a country we are not the ones who 'risk it', we like to play simple, perhaps, clean and without a lot of spin. Which is a good thing, but sometimes culture hinders those who want to dare, making them look like the alternative. It's strange considering that Italian genius has always been present in our history, maybe we've just fallen asleep a little.

IF YOU HAD TO DUET WITH THREE INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS, WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE?

Damien Rice, Idles, Fountain DC!

ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON ANY NEW PROJECTS?

There is an album project, but for now I'm just thinking about releasing as many singles as I can after the pandemic stops, for the album I'll figure out what to do very very soon!
